DefenseLithuania’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed last week that future Embraer C-390 Millennium airlifters will replace the C-27J Spartan turboprops currently operated by its Air Force.
The statement contrasts with the government’s earlier position, announced at the Paris Air Show in June, when officials suggested both types would serve together.
In an official post, the ministry underlined that the C-390 offers lower maintenance costs and greater mission flexibility, covering air transport, aerial refuelling, search and rescue, firefighting, and reconnaissance.
The Lithuanian government is still finalizing negotiations with Embraer to sign a contract for three C-390 Millennium aircraft. The move is part of Lithuania’s effort to modernize its small transport fleet.
The government had already announced the C-390’s selection in June after a market analysis involving three competing manufacturers. Defence Minister David Shakalienė noted that shorter delivery times and the potential for industrial cooperation with Lithuanian companies were key factors in the decision.
Lithuania currently operates three C-27J Spartans and two LET L-410s. The arrival of the C-390s is expected to enhance payload capacity, range, and NATO interoperability, reinforcing the country’s role in allied operations.
