DefenseLockheed Martin handed over the first F-35A Lightning II to the Finnish Air Force during a ceremony at its Fort Worth, Texas facility, on December 16. The event was attended by government and military officials from both the United States and Finland.
The delivery represents a key step in Finland’s plan to modernize its air combat capabilities. Finland is set to receive a total of 64 F-35A fighters, which will constitute the largest F-35 fleet in Northern Europe.
The first F-35A will arrive in Finland in early 2026. Finnish pilots will conduct their initial training at Ebbing Air Force Base in Arkansas before the aircraft are deployed to operational units.
"Finland is a NATO member and committed to act as a dependable defence provider in the northern flank," said Finland's Minister of Defence, Antti Häkkänen. "Finland is investing heavily in national industrial capabilities through industrial participation, we believe that our investment and highly capable defence industry can benefit the F-35 program not just locally but also at a more global level."
Globally, more than 1,270 F-35 aircraft are in service, having accumulated over one million flight hours. The program continues to expand with new operators and additional deliveries.

On December 8, the first Finnish F-35A, designated JF-501, completed its maiden flight at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. This milestone initiates Finland’s largest defense acquisition, which will replace its aging F/A-18 Hornet fleet.
The handover ceremony underscored the significance of the F-35 program for Finland’s air defense strategy and its defense cooperation with transatlantic partners.
