Lufthansa adopts IATA Turbulence Aware system across group airlines

Real-time turbulence data to be shared with global database; SWISS and Edelweiss Air also participating

Lufthansa has introduced the IATA Turbulence Aware system, a data-sharing platform that collects and distributes real-time turbulence information from participating airlines.

Under the program, aircraft equipped with onboard sensors measure turbulence intensity during flight and transmit anonymized data to a central database managed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Pilots can access the information directly through cockpit navigation displays, where color-coded symbols indicate the location, altitude, time and severity of reported turbulence.

Lufthansa said the system supplements traditional meteorological forecasts and allows for more precise route planning. Airlines within the Lufthansa Group, including Swiss International Air Lines and Edelweiss Air, are also participating in the initiative.

“With ‘IATA Turbulence Aware’, we are setting new standards for safety and comfort in aviation. This technology enables us to offer our passengers a smoother and more pleasant flight experience while making an important contribution to safety in global aviation,” said Francesco Sciortino, Hub Manager Frankfurt.

According to Lufthansa, the real-time data can also support operational decisions on board, enabling flight crews to alert cabin staff in advance of turbulence and adjust onboard service if necessary.

In addition to contributing to the IATA database, turbulence measurements recorded by Lufthansa aircraft are transmitted to the German Weather Service to support long-term calibration of weather forecasting models.
