Malaysia Airlines in talks to order A320neo jets
Malaysia Airlines is in talks to order A320neo and A321neo jets, Airbus International Executive Vice President Wouter van Wersch told The Edge Malaysia.
During a press conference, he admitted that there are talks, but did not mention aircraft numbers or what the country’s flag carrier’s plans are.
Van Wersch, however, stressed that Malaysia is responsible for supplying many parts for the A320 family and that this would be a good reason to opt for the single-aisle aircraft.
Malaysia Airlines currently has a fleet of 42 Boeing 737-800 jets plus four 737 MAX 8s, which were received from the end of 2023.
Configured in two cabin classes, the 737-800s have been in Malaysia’s fleet since the end of 2010.
The airline has, however, been moving closer to Airbus, having ended its operations with Boeing widebodies in 2016 (777) and 2017 (747).
In early 2024, Malaysia Airlines announced a leasing agreement for 20 A330-900s that will replace its A330-300s. The carrier also has 20 options for the widebody.
Malaysia’s long-haul fleet also consists of the A350-900 (seven aircraft). In 2020, it retired the six A380s it had received between 2012 and 2013.
