Air TransportMalaysia Airlines will double its fleet of A330-900 widebodies over the next few years with an additional order for 20 aircraft, Airbus has announced.
The announcement was made on Friday in Paris during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to France.
The new order was foreseen in the contract signed in 2022 as purchase options. At the time, MAG, the holding company that controls the airline, ordered ten A330neos and closed the lease of another ten aircraft with Avolon.
The first A330-900 was delivered in November last year and since then three more aircraft have joined the fleet.
Malaysia has been flying from Kuala Lumpur to destinations such as Melbourne, Auckland and Bali. The A330neos are configured with 297 seats in two classes (28 in business class and 269 in economy).

“The A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range, and cabin comfort to support our network and growth strategy,” said Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG.
Despite the order being three years after the first agreement, Malaysia Airlines will only take delivery of the 20 additional A330neos between 2029 and 2031.
Of the first 20 jets, another six will be delivered in 2025 and the remainder by 2028. They will replace the aging A330-200 and A330-300 aircraft in the fleet.
