More than planes: Embraer now launches its first warship
Embraer expanded its already extensive range of activities on August 9 by having its first warship christened.
The foray into a naval project takes place in the Brazilian Navy’s “Tamandaré” Class Frigate Program.
The first of four ships had its launch ceremony held at a shipyard in the southern region of the country, where the “Águas Azuis” consortium, formed by Embraer, its subsidiary Atech and Thyssenkrupp, has been manufacturing the new class since 2022.
The frigate design is based on the German MEKO ships, developed by Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, which is leading the project.
Atech is responsible for supplying the CMS (Combat Management System) and IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System) and is the recipient of technology transfer in cooperation with Atlas Elektronik, a subsidiary of Thyssenkrupp, and L3 MAPPS.
Embraer Defense & Security will integrate sensors and weapons into the combat system.
Commissioning in 2025
The F200 Tamandaré frigate is expected to undergo the launch process at sea on a floating dock. The vessel will then be transferred to a dock where finishing services and installation of systems and equipment will be carried out.
The ships have a displacement of approximately 3,380 tons, are 107.2 meters long, have a speed of 25 knots and a range of 5,500 km, and are capable of navigating turbulent seas in the South Atlantic.
The Brazilian Navy expects to receive the F200 by the end of 2025 and the others by 2029. The second ship, F201 “Jeronimo de Albuquerque” is already under construction at the same shipyard.
