Part of a broader European coalition including Belgium, Denmark, and Norway to boost Ukraine’s air defense

The Netherlands has completed the delivery of all 24 F-16 fighter jets it pledged to Ukraine, marking a key milestone in Europe’s effort to bolster the country’s defense amid its ongoing war with Russia.

The final batch of jets departed Volkel Air Base on May 26, 2025, heading to Belgium, where they will undergo final preparations before being officially transferred to the Ukrainian Air Force.

The delivery was carried out in three stages – in October 2024, February 2025, and now in May – and included not only aircraft but also pilot training, spare parts, ammunition, maintenance, and fuel, ensuring the Ukrainian side receives a fully operational package.

This transfer is part of a multi-national European initiative led by the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Norway, which collectively pledged up to 65 F-16s to Ukraine. Belgium, in addition to hosting the final staging area, has confirmed it will also donate part of its own F-16 fleet, with deliveries expected to begin later in 2025.

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans attended the handover event and emphasized that the F-16s will be “vital for protecting Ukrainian airspace” amid continued Russian missile and drone attacks.

The arrival of F-16s represents a major leap in capabilities for the Ukrainian Air Force, which currently relies heavily on Soviet-era aircraft. The integration of NATO-standard multirole fighters will enable Ukraine to conduct a broader range of missions, including air defense, tactical strike, and patrol, with precision-guided Western munitions.

Despite the progress, the Ukrainian Air Force has lost three F-16s in action since August.
