Nigeria’s Caliphate Air plans Embraer regional jet fleet ahead of 2026 launch

Sokoto state-backed carrier targets domestic and short-haul routes from Abuja base

A new Nigerian airline backed by the Sokoto State Government is preparing to launch operations in the second half of 2026 with plans to operate Embraer regional jets.

Caliphate Air has secured its Air Transport Licence (ATL) in 2025 and is progressing through the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) process with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The carrier intends to begin scheduled domestic passenger and cargo services from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The airline is understood to be evaluating Embraer regional jets for its initial fleet. Aircraft such as the E170 and E190, which typically seat between around 70 and 114 passengers depending on configuration, are commonly used on domestic and short-haul regional routes where demand does not justify larger narrowbody jets.

Such aircraft would position Caliphate Air in Nigeria’s domestic and near-regional market, linking northwestern cities with major hubs such as Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Sokoto, located in Nigeria’s far northwest, has historically faced limited and inconsistent air connectivity, with travelers often relying on long road journeys or irregular flight schedules.

Caliphate Air is wholly owned by the Sokoto State Government but operates as a limited liability company under the Sokoto State Investment Council. The company says it will focus on safety, operational reliability and on-time performance as core elements of its business model.

Nigeria has seen a wave of state-backed airline initiatives in recent years, as regional governments seek to improve connectivity and stimulate economic activity. While several projects have been announced, many remain in development phases pending regulatory approvals, fleet acquisition and operational readiness.
