Paraguay intends to finalize an agreement to acquire six border patrol and close air support aircraft A-29 Super Tucano, from Embraer, in 2024.

The statement came from the Minister of Defense of the South American country, Oscar Gonzales, in a press conference on Thursday.

According to him, turboprops will be used to face new threats from drug trafficking and organized crime.

The Paraguayan Air Force was presented with the Super Tucano in February, during celebrations of the service’s anniversary. The event was attended by the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who even occupied the front seat of the aircraft.

In May, Santiago Peña and the Minister of Defense of Brazil, Jose Múcio and the president of Embraer, Franciso Gomes Neto, held a meeting in Asunción to discuss the agreement that should be financed by the Brazilian development bank BNDES.

Embraer is already known to the Paraguayan Air Force, which operates six AT-27 Tucano turboprops, the training aircraft that gave rise to the Super Tucano.

Recently Uruguay also reported plans to acquire six A-29 Super Tucano.
