Unsurprisingly, Qatar Airways has confirmed the cancellation of an order for up to 50 737 MAX jets made with Boeing in 2022.
Although not mentioned during the announcement of the deal for 210 787 and 777X widebodies, the cancellation of the 737 order was expected as it came at a time when Qatar was battling Airbus in court.
The Doha-based carrier’s CEO, Bard Mohammed Al Meer, confirmed to Bloomberg that the order was indeed cancelled under the new agreement.
Qatar had ordered 25 737 MAX 10s with an option for 25 more aircraft in July 2022, months after revealing a memorandum of understanding with Boeing.
The 230-seat jets would replace a similar A321neo order that had been canceled by Airbus.

The European planemaker was fighting back against its client after Qatar filed a lawsuit in a London court seeking compensation after several of its A350s developed paint finish problems on the fuselage and wings.
In 2023, however, the two companies reached an amicable agreement and the A321neo order was reinstated.

Interestingly, Qatar Airways has nine 737 MAX 8s in its fleet, which were leased on emergency terms, taking advantage of aircraft that were going to Russia’s S7 Airlines and were grounded by sanctions.
Currently, most of these planes fly with IndiGo in India on a lease basis.
