The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has inducted its first P-8A Poseidon into a multi-year upgrade program, coinciding with the integration of its 13th aircraft into operational service.

The Increment 3 Block 2 modifications will introduce new antennas, sensors, and software to enhance processing and communication systems. These updates are intended to improve the aircraft’s capability to locate and identify advanced submarines.

Australia is the first global customer to initiate the Increment 3 upgrade for the P-8A platform. The program is scheduled to continue through 2026, when the 14th and final aircraft is expected to join the fleet.

The first two RAAF P-8As will undergo modifications at Boeing’s maintenance facility in Jacksonville, Florida. These are the initial international aircraft to be upgraded at this site.

“These upgrades, together with the delivery of the 13th P-8A, represent two important advancements for Australia’s defence of its vast coastline,” said Naomi Smith, director of Sustainment Operations at Boeing Defence Australia.

The RAAF has operated the P-8A since 2016, building its capabilities for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare. The current upgrades are part of a broader effort to maintain operational relevance amid evolving regional security requirements.
