Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets were deployed from RAF Coningsby in the United Kingdom to conduct a NATO air defense mission over Poland, following the detection of 19 Russian drones that entered Polish airspace. The operation, part of NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission, was publicly announced on September 10 after the incursion.

The deployment involved two Typhoon jets supported by an RAF Voyager aircraft providing air-to-air refueling capability. This marks the first reported instance of NATO member forces directly engaging Russian drones since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

According to official reports, Polish defense forces engaged the drones and shot down three of the 19 that crossed into their territory. The incident led Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to describe the situation as the most severe threat of open conflict in the region since World War Two.

Additional airspace violations were reported by Romania and Estonia, with Estonia noting a 12-minute incursion by Russian MiG-31s. These incidents have prompted further discussions among NATO members under Article 4, which allows countries to raise security concerns with the North Atlantic Council.

The Eurofighter Typhoon, a multirole fighter developed by a European consortium, is a key asset in the RAF’s quick reaction alert force. The UK has announced plans to increase defense spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027, reinforcing its contribution to NATO operations. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth emphasized the established partnership with NATO and the readiness of RAF assets for collective defense.
