Saab has received a SEK 1 billion (about US$105 million) order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for a new launcher system for the Gripen C/D and Gripen E fighter jets. The contract covers serial production and follows a prior development and integration agreement.

The launcher system enables carriage of air-to-air missiles and countermeasure pods on the Gripen C/D and E models. Saab confirmed that the solution is integrated on the aircraft’s weapon pylons, providing a sophisticated link between the aircraft and mounted stores.

The FMV’s order represents an exercised option within an existing contract framework. This step transitions the launcher from development to production phase, supporting the Swedish Air Force’s operational requirements.

“The launcher system is an important part of continuing to ensure Gripen availability and supporting the Swedish Air Force’s capabilities,” said Lars Tossman, Head of Aeronautics at Saab.

Saab is experiencing high activity in the Gripen program, with 60 units on order from Sweden and deliveries underway. Brazil has ordered 36 aircraft and Thailand 4, expanding the type’s international footprint.

The manufacturer is also in discussions with Bombardier regarding a potential final assembly line in Canada. This move would address possible orders from the Royal Canadian Air Force and Ukraine.
