Southwest Airlines has launched an updated Boeing 737 MAX 8 cabin, introducing new seating and inflight amenities across its fleet. The US carrier will also implement assigned seating and a premium section beginning January, marking a departure from its traditional open seating model.

The new Boeing MAX 8, registration N8972S, entered service on Thursday, October 16, debuting the new configuration.

The new interior features RECARO-manufactured seats with increased legroom in select rows, along with redesigned meal tables and device holders. Passengers will have access to larger baggage compartments, refreshed lighting, and both USB-A and USB-C ports at every seat.

These upgrades form part of a broader modernization strategy aimed at enhancing safety and the overall passenger experience, particularly during boarding and deplaning. The updated MAX 8 interior is expected to improve operational efficiency and passenger convenience.

Southwest has historically distinguished itself with policies such as open seating and no checked bag fees. The shift to assigned seating and the introduction of baggage charges represent a significant change in the airline’s long-standing business model.

The carrier has also announced the introduction of a premium section and overnight flights for the first time.

Industry observers view these changes as a response to competitive pressures from network carriers such as Delta and United.
