The Spanish government has approved a €3.7 billion (US$ 4.3 billion) defense plan that includes the procurement of up to 45 Hürjet advanced jet trainers, alongside other aircraft and helicopters, as part of a broad effort to modernize the Spanish Air Force’s pilot training capabilities.

The initiative aims to replace the current fleet of Northrop F-5M trainers, which have been in service for several decades. The first Hürjet deliveries are scheduled for 2028, with full operational integration expected by 2031.

The program will see the Hürjet, developed by Turkish Aerospace, adapted to the specific requirements of the Spanish Air Force by Airbus Defence & Space. Initial production will be carried out in Turkey, with subsequent modifications and systems integration taking place in Spain.

A key component of the program is the establishment of a new training system at Talavera la Real Air Base in Extremadura. The solution, designated ITS-C, is designed to support advanced fighter pilot instruction and is expected to have a minimum operational lifespan of 30 years.

Airbus will act as the main integrator for the program, assuming responsibility for logistics support and system adaptation. The partnership with Turkish Aerospace will be formalized through a temporary joint venture structure, facilitating technology transfer and industrial collaboration.
