The Spanish Air Force (Ejercito del Aire) has taken delivery of its second Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) at Getafe, Madrid, on Wednesday. The first A330-200 was delivered in April.

This delivery forms part of Spain’s ongoing strategic airlift modernization program, initiated by the Ministry of Defense in 2021 to enhance national capabilities.

The A330 MRTT offers in-flight refueling, personnel and cargo transport, and medical evacuation roles. Airbus stated that the platform significantly improves Spain’s strategic autonomy.

The two transport and aerial refueling aircraft will serve with the 45th Wing, Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base, also in the Spanish capital.

Despite being the home of the MRTT conversion, Spain has not yet operated the aircraft based on the widebody A330. The Ministry of Defense, however, contracted Airbus to convert three jets in January 2021, which were flown by Iberia.

Spain plans to operate a total of three A330 MRTTs by 2026, with the recent delivery following a non-stop 11,600 km flight completed by the first unit in 15 hours and 26 minutes.
