Spirit Airlines has announced significant workforce reductions as part of a broader restructuring effort, citing ongoing financial challenges. The airline stated on Thursday that it will furlough 365 pilots and downgrade the positions of up to 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026.

These cuts are part of a plan to reduce annual pilot spending by $100 million and conserve cash. The airline, which currently employs about 2,400 pilots, previously furloughed 330 pilots and plans to furlough another 270 in November.

In addition to pilot reductions, Spirit intends to lay off approximately 1,800 flight attendants, representing about one-third of its cabin crew. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on December 1.

Spirit has also decided to reject about 90% of its upcoming aircraft deliveries from its primary lessor, AerCap. The airline plans to cancel 12 airport leases and 19 ground handling contracts as it seeks to streamline operations.

The carrier projects a 25% reduction in total operational capacity and estimated losses exceeding $800 million in 2025. The planned furloughs are expected to save the company $211 million.

Spirit filed for bankruptcy in August, the second time in less than a year, as it faces persistent financial pressures. The restructuring measures aim to stabilize the business, though the carrier continues to operate under constrained conditions.
