Air TransportStar Air and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 1 to establish a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility dedicated to Embraer aircraft in India.
The agreement is intended to reduce Star Air’s reliance on foreign MRO centers, a process that currently incurs approximately US$17million in annual costs for the airline. By localizing maintenance services, the partnership seeks to lower expenses and improve turnaround times for Embraer fleet operators.
Under the terms of the MoU, HAL will provide comprehensive MRO support that includes airframe painting and specialized training programs.
The Nashik facility, which already supports various aircraft types, will be leveraged for the new operation. HAL’s recent experience with the overhaul of an IndiGo A320 Neo demonstrates its expanding capabilities in the civil aviation sector.

The collaboration follows guidelines set by the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Package – Part 4, which promotes the development of domestic MRO infrastructure. The new facility is also expected to attract other carriers operating Embraer jets.
Headquartered in Bengaluru, Star Air is a regional airline that has focused on Embraer aircraft as a differentiator. It currently operates a fleet of six 76-seat E175s and four 50-seat ERJ 145s.
