The Swedish Air Force took delivery of its first Saab Gripen E fighter on October 20, at F 7 wing in Skaraborg. The handover ceremony included representatives from the Ministry of Defence and Saab.

Gripen E introduces extended range and increased payload compared to previous Gripen variants. The fighter incorporates new sensors, radar, and an updated communications suite, supporting operations in diverse threat environments.

“This represents an important milestone in the development of Swedish defense. It is the result of long-term cooperation and close cooperation between the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Air Force (FMV), and Swedish industry. The Gripen E strengthens our national defense capability to face future threats together with our allies. Continue to make us proud,” said Commander-in-Chief Michael Claesson.

Sweden ordered 60 Gripen E aircraft in February 2013 as part of a broader modernization effort. F 7 Skaraborg was selected as the initial operational unit for the type.

Swedish pilots will continue operating JAS 39 C/D models in parallel with the Gripen E, as the force transitions to the new platform. The introduction of the E variant requires pilots to manage increased information for decision-making.

The Gripen E program builds on longstanding collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces, the Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the domestic defense industry.

Besides Sweden, Brazil is currently the only other operator of the new generation, with Thailand and Colombia expected to join in the future.
