Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has taken a key step in modernizing its long-haul fleet with the maiden test flight of its new Airbus A350-900. The aircraft took off from Airbus’s final assembly line in Toulouse on August 6 at 11:27 a.m. local time.

Temporarily registered as F-WZHI, the aircraft remains under the responsibility of Airbus. Once delivered to SWISS in early October, it will carry the Swiss registration HB-IFA.

During the first flight, Airbus engineers monitored various technical parameters, including aerodynamic performance, cabin pressurization, avionics, electrical systems, and environmental controls.

The flight followed a series of ground tests that assessed braking, taxiing, and engine response. A high-speed rejected takeoff was also performed to validate safety-critical systems.

This A350-900 is the first of ten aircraft that will be delivered to SWISS by 2031. All units will feature the carrier’s new “SWISS Senses” cabin layout and are expected to offer a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, along with up to 50% lower noise levels compared to previous generation widebodies.

The aircraft showcased in Toulouse features a custom “SWISS Wanderlust” livery celebrating Switzerland’s cultural and natural heritage. It has been named “Lausanne,” after the city on Lake Geneva, known for hosting the International Olympic Committee and for its importance as a cultural and economic hub in the country.
