The Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) held a farewell ceremony for its last Northrop F-5 Tiger II jets on July 4 at Hualien Air Base.

The aircraft, once the mainstay of the ROCAF, was still maintained in only a few variants, including the RF-5E reconnaissance aircraft.

To mark the occasion, the air force flew five aircraft over the air base in Taiwan.

The first F-5s were delivered to the country in the 1960s and were also produced locally in large numbers.

More than 300 fighters were flown by the ROCAF, but fewer than 60 remained in active service.

The Taiwan Air Force replaced them with the AIDC T-5 advanced jet trainer and later the F-CK-1C fighter, both of which were produced locally.

The ROCAF also operates F-16 and Mirage 2000-5 fighters.
