Thailand Approves Acquisition of Additional Saab Gripen Jets

Royal Thai Air Force to expand fleet to 12 aircraft by 2035

The Royal Thai Air Force has officially approved the purchase of four additional Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets, which will be integrated into its existing fleet of Saab Gripen C and D aircraft.

These new jets raise Thailand’s planned Gripen fleet to a total of 12 aircraft. The acquisition is not connected to recent tensions with Cambodia, despite a temporary ceasefire over border disputes in a key tourist area, nor is it a response to current regional conflict.

The purchase underlines Thailand’s commitment to modernizing its air capabilities through an advanced fighter platform developed by Saab.

The deal is part of a long-term program that aims to complete deliveries and operational integration of all 12 Gripen E/F aircraft by 2035.

Thailand expects the first batch of E/F jets to be fully operational by 2029, equipped with advanced systems such as AESA radar, IRST sensors, Meteor missiles, extended flight range, and enhanced electronic warfare and precision munition compatibility.

Currently, Thailand’s Gripen C/D assets are based at Wing 7 in Surat Thani, consisting of eight single-seat C-models and four two-seat D-models. The country also operates two Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft for airborne early warning and aerial defense coordination alongside the Gripen fighters.

Thailand’s shift toward the Gripen represents a strategic move away from reliance on U.S.-made aircraft; previous plans to acquire the F-35 were ultimately abandoned.

Recent decisions by Colombia and Peru to acquire the same Gripen variants underscore the jet’s growing appeal among nations seeking a high-performance yet affordable alternative.
