Saab has signed a contract with Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the delivery of four Gripen E/F fighters to Thailand, valued at approximately SEK 5.3 billion (US$ 556 million). Deliveries are scheduled between 2025 and 2030.

The order includes three single-seat Gripen E fighters and one two-seat Gripen F, along with associated equipment, support, and training for the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF).

A long-term offset agreement is also part of the deal, covering defense technology transfer and industrial cooperation that will generate new investments across different sectors of Thailand’s economy.

The Gripen E/F is a modernized evolution of the Swedish fighter, featuring advanced mission systems and the ability to operate effectively across a wide range of scenarios.

Thailand already operates a squadron of 11 Gripen C/D fighters acquired in 2011. The addition of the Gripen E/F will expand the RTAF’s independent capabilities while complementing its existing fleet.

The deal follows a competitive process in which Saab’s proposal prevailed over the American F-16, underlining Thailand’s decision to deepen defense cooperation with Sweden while securing access to advanced technology.

Thailand will be the third operator of the Gripen E/F after Brazil and Sweden. Colombia is expected to join the group soon.
