Tigerair Taiwan has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for four A321neo aircraft, marking the low-cost carrier’s first order for the type. The agreement was announced on 4 February during the Singapore Airshow. According to the companies, the new aircraft will allow for increased capacity and network expansion.

Tigerair Taiwan currently operates a fleet of 17 A320 Family aircraft, comprising nine A320ceo and eight A320neo jets. The addition of the A321neo increases fleet commonality within the A320 Family, allowing the airline to limit training, maintenance and operating complexity as it expands.

“The purchase of A321neo aircraft is a cornerstone of our ‘third-generation’ fleet expansion, designed to maximise operational efficiency as we scale for regional dominance,” said Joyce Huang, chairperson of Tigerair Taiwan. “Configured with 232 seats, the A321neo allows us to increase capacity on our high-demand ‘golden routes’ and accelerate network expansion.”

“We are pleased to see Tigerair Taiwan reaffirm its confidence in Airbus as it takes another step in its fleet growth,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, executive vice president of sales for Airbus commercial aircraft. “The addition of the A321neo will complement its existing A320 fleet.”

Tigerair Taiwan is part of the China Airlines Group, the main airline group in Taiwan. The low-cost subsidiary was founded in December 2013 and launched operations in September 2014, focusing on short- and medium-haul routes across East and Southeast Asia.

The A321neo is the largest member of the A320neo Family and is widely used by low-cost carriers seeking higher seat density and lower cost per seat. Airbus said the A320neo Family has accumulated more than 10,000 orders from over 130 customers worldwide.
