Urumqi Air has taken delivery of its first COMAC C909 aircraft, registration B-659C, in Urumqi, becoming the eighth customer of the type in China in 2025.

The airline’s acquisition follows a November order for 40 C909s as part of a commitment by its parent company, Hainan Airlines Group.

According to local media, the airframe is the eighteenth C909 delivered so far in 2025 and the 175th delivered overall.

Urumqi Air plans to operate the C909 primarily on regional routes within the Xinjiang region. The addition of the C909 is intended to complement existing services. Prior to this delivery, the airline’s fleet consisted exclusively of 16 Boeing 737-800 jets.

Formerly known as the ARJ21-700, this regional jet has a capacity for up to 90 passengers and was developed based on Western aircraft. It is powered by GE CF34 turbofan engines and can fly distances of up to 3,700 kilometers.
