The US Air Force (USAF) confirmed on Tuesday plans to acquire two Boeing 747-8 aircraft for US$400 million to support its presidential transport program. The acquisition is intended to be used as a stockpile of parts for the two new Air Force Ones VC-25B.

Despite not revealing the seller, reports claim that the 747-8s belong to Lufthansa with the first aircraft scheduled for delivery early next year, and the second to follow before the end of 2026.

The Air Force highlighted the need to establish an overall training and sustainment strategy for the incoming 747-8i fleet, given that the type is no longer in active production. The shift will require updates to maintenance and operational procedures.

A spokesperson for the Air Force noted that these costs include the integration of new communications capabilities, which allow the VC-25B to meet evolving mission requirements. The Air Force awarded Boeing a $15.5 million contract modification, bringing the total contract value to more than $4.3 billion.

The first aircraft configured for presidential use is now expected to enter service by mid-2028, a delay from the original 2022 target.
