DefenseThe US Air Force (USAF) has commenced manufacturing the Boeing F-47, its new sixth-generation stealth fighter. The decision follows an announcement by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin, confirming that the inaugural flight is scheduled for 2028.
Designed to succeed the F-22 Raptor, the F-47 is expected to incorporate advanced stealth, sensing and communication capabilities. The aircraft’s combat range will exceed 1,000 miles, nearly double that of the F-22, aiming to meet evolving operational demands.
According to fiscal year 2026 budget documents, the F-47’s development phase will continue at least through 2030. The Air Force plans to acquire over 185 units of the new model, highlighting a significant fleet upgrade.

The program, initially paused during the Biden administration, was reactivated by officials from the previous administration. Boeing is expanding its St. Louis facilities to support F-47 production, reflecting industrial adjustments required for the project.
In recent statements, Gen. Allvin emphasized the urgency of modernizing combat aircraft and the integration of collaborative systems. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink addressed ongoing delays in other programs, indicating a broader effort to optimize resources and timelines, according to reports.
The Air Force is prioritizing the F-47 amid leadership transitions, as Gen. Allvin is set to retire in the fall. The emphasis remains on preparing the service for future operational challenges and ensuring air superiority.
