US Air Force suspends deliveries of KC-46 tanker
The US Air Force (USAF) has paused deliveries of KC-46A tankers after finding cracks in two aircraft that Boeing was preparing for delivery.
At the same time, the service began inspections on the 89 aerial tankers that are in service, according to The War Zone.
The delivery pause was put into effect on February 27 and the two KC-46s have been grounded while repairs are made. The cracks, however, are not on critical flight surfaces, the USAF told Flight Global.
The KC-46A Pegasus is one of the most controversial programs developed by Boeing.
The aircraft, based on the widebody 767-200, was contracted to partially replace the KC-135 and all the KC-10s (now retired), but has been experiencing problems since its first deliveries.
Contracted at a fixed price, the KC-46 has also caused huge losses for the US manufacturer.
