DefenseThe United States Air Force (USAF) took delivery of its first operational T-7A Red Hawk jet trainer on December 5 at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. The aircraft is assigned to the 99th Flying Training Squadron within the 12th Flying Training Wing.
The Boeing T-7A Red Hawk replaces the T-38C Talon, which has been in service for decades as the primary advanced trainer for USAF pilots. The new platform is intended to prepare pilots for fifth- and sixth-generation fighter aircraft.
According to Steve Schmidt, Boeing T-7A Red Hawk pilot, the delivery marks an important step in transitioning training to a modern platform. "The T-7A brings a new level of performance to the training environment," Schmidt said.

Lt. Col. Phillip Bourquin, director of operations for the 99th Flying Training Squadron, noted the significance for operational readiness. "This aircraft gives us the capabilities needed for the next generation of pilots," Bourquin stated.
The Air Force has announced plans to hold an arrival ceremony for the T-7A at JBSA-Randolph, with the date to be confirmed.
Contracted with Boeing in 2018 for a fixed amount, the USAF intends to receive 350 aircraft to partially replace its T-38 Talons, planes that have been in service for decades.
