Vietjet has chosen not to renew its wet-lease agreement with Chengdu Airlines for two COMAC C909 aircraft, with the contract expiring on October 18.

The decision was attributed to high operational costs and regulatory restrictions in Vietnam, rather than aircraft performance, according to Reuters sources.

Vietjet introduced the C909s into its fleet in April 2025, marking the type’s first operation in the Vietnamese market.

The aircraft operated domestic routes connecting Con Dao, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City. The final C909 flights under Vietjet took place on October 17.

The introduction of the C909s followed a state visit by the Chinese president to Vietnam, seeking greater bilateral involvement in aviation.

Vietjet’s fleet continues to be dominated by Airbus models, including 36 A321neo, 36 A321, 17 A320, 11 A320neo, and 8 A330-300 aircraft.

COMAC, in turn, continues to seek to expand foreign markets for its 90-seat regional jet. The C909 currently flies in Indonesia and Laos, in addition to China.
