Air TransportVietnam Airlines has finalized an order for 50 737 MAX 8 aircraft, the flag carrier’s first purchase of Boeing single-aisle jets.
The agreement was announced in Washington, D.C., during a visit by Vietnam’s General Secretary To Lam and attended by U.S. government representatives and Boeing executives.
The order had been under discussion since 2023, when then-U.S. President Joe Biden visited Vietnam and the two sides signaled closer economic and aviation ties. In recent months, the Trump administration has urged Hanoi to narrow its trade surplus with the United States, placing large commercial deals in focus.
Vietnam Airlines said the 737-8 aircraft will support expansion on domestic and regional routes as travel demand in Southeast Asia increases. The airline expects traffic in Vietnam to reach more than 75 million annual passengers within the next decade.
“The investment in 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft marks a significant step in building a modern fleet while enhancing operational performance and elevating service standards,” said Dang Ngoc Hoa, chairman of Vietnam Airlines’ board.

The 737-8 can seat up to 200 passengers, depending on configuration, and has a published range of about 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km).
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on regional and long-haul routes, including services to Europe. The addition of the 737-8 will introduce a second Boeing aircraft family into its fleet and expand its narrowbody capacity.
The carrier’s current narrowbody fleet consists exclusively of Airbus A320 family aircraft, including 42 A321ceo, 20 A321neo and three A320neo jets. The introduction of the 737-8 will diversify that segment for the first time.
Vietnam Airlines has also said for several years that it is evaluating the acquisition of aircraft in the 100- to 150-seat category. Airbus is offering the A220, while Embraer is promoting its E2 family as part of the airline’s long-term fleet planning.
