Virgin Australia introduced its first Embraer E190-E2 to the Western Australia charter market on October 27. The aircraft operated inaugural flight VA9217, departing Perth at 7:15am and arriving in Boolgeeda at 9:05am AWST.

The E190-E2 is the first new aircraft type added to Western Australia’s charter sector in this century. The move addresses the specific operational requirements of the region’s mining industry, which demands flexible and efficient air transport.

Virgin Australia’s mining charter operations have historically relied on older aircraft. The E190-E2 brings a new configuration, offering eight business class and 92 economy seats, as well as wider seats and increased overhead storage.

“This aircraft sets a new benchmark for comfort, efficiency, and sustainability and ensures we are well-positioned to deliver a premium experience for our customers and the communities we serve today and into the future,” said Virgin executive general manager, Nathan Miller

The aircraft features Wi-Fi connectivity and personal device-based entertainment, aiming to enhance the passenger experience on routes serving remote areas. “Coral Bay” is the first of eight E190-E2s scheduled to join the fleet, with further deliveries expected through 2027.

The airline has ordered eight E190-E2s, with four aircraft on lease. Only one E190-E2 has been delivered to date.

Virgin Australia plans to phase out its F100 fleet beginning in early 2026 as additional E190-E2s enter service.
