Virgin Australia receives its first Embraer E190-E2 in fleet renewal

New aircraft supplied by Azorra to replace Fokker 100 e its part of a deal for eight jets

Virgin Australia has taken delivery of its first Embraer E190-E2 aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet modernization strategy. The handover took place at Embraer’s facility in São José dos Campos, Brazil, on September 2.

This delivery is notable as it represents the first operation of an Embraer E190-E2 by a major Australian airline. Virgin Australia’s decision to incorporate this aircraft into its fleet is part of a broader plan to replace its older Fokker 100 planes, which have been a staple in its lineup.

The E190-E2, equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, offers enhanced fuel efficiency—up to 30% more economical compared to the Fokker 100—reducing both emissions and operational costs. The aircraft is configured with 100 seats, optimizing passenger capacity while maintaining comfort.

“We are incredibly excited by the introduction of the Embraer 190-E2s to the Virgin Australia Regional Airlines fleet. Replacing our Fokker 100s with these next-generation jets allows us to better connect resources industry clients and regional communities across Western Australia with improved reliability, significantly reduced noise, and lower emissions,” said Nick Rohrlach, Group Executive, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines.

Virgin Australia’s transition to the E190-E2 is supported by a total order of eight E2 jets, initially announced in August 2024. Four of these aircraft were later sold to Azorra and leased back to Virgin Australia, facilitating flexible fleet management.

The introduction of the E190-E2 is expected to improve service on key routes in Western Australia, aligning with Virgin Australia’s strategy to strengthen its domestic network. The airline, founded in 2000, continues to be a significant player in the Australian aviation market, offering extensive domestic and short-haul international services.

With three additional E190-E2 aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026, Virgin Australia is positioning itself to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. The move is aimed at maintaining competitive edge in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.

Embraer’s relationship with Virgin Australia dates back to 2006, when the precursor Virgin Blue ordered three E170s and 11 E190s, with 6 options, with deliveries announced in 2008 (E170) and 2011 (E190).
